I WAKE WITH A POUNDING HEADACHE.
I shower and search the kitchen for something to remedy the throbbing. I didn’t think to pack aspirin, and although the refrigerator has been stocked, there are several things that still needed to be purchased. Phillip’s still sleeping, so I write him a note, promising him Starbucks when I return.
With the line to the door at Starbuck’s, I stand patiently, absorbing the smell of fresh coffee and watching the four baristas work hurriedly. The line is creeping forward slowly when I hear a sharp intake of breath from the woman behind me. I turn around to see what her reaction is about. She’s turned toward the door, so I sway my body to look over her shoulder. Ashton’s walking in and surveying the line with the same bewilderment that I did when I first arrived. His face brightens when his eyes find mine. He murmurs to the others in line as steps around them in my direction.
“There you are, sweetheart. You beat me here.” He hugs me and kisses my cheek, then leans in closer and whispers, “Go with it. Did you see how long this fucking line is?”
I laugh, shaking my head. There are a couple of disapproving glances, mostly from men, so for added affect he places his arm around me and squeezes me closer. Our sudden closeness causes me to intake a deep breath. He smells amazing as his strong arms pull me tight against his firm body.
“You look surprised to see me. Where’s Mr. David?” he says as he bends down to talk quietly in my ear.
“Los Angeles,” I mutter.
“No shit!” His voice is loud enough for everyone to hear him and he cringes, as do I. My head’s still pounding and I still haven’t gotten my coffee.
“No shit, we’re both returning to Nashville today.”
“I didn’t think I would see the day where that controlling bastard would let you out of his sight.” He laughs softly.
“If you’re going to stand there and berate my boyfriend, then get your ass in the back of the line,” I say only half teasing.
“Relax, I know you’re in deep with one another. I’ve been warned.”
“Warned?”
“It was a not so subtle warning to stay away from what is his. I probably shouldn’t even be standing here next to you,” he says flatly.
We step up to the counter and place our order. Ashton graciously pays for both our coffees and my scone. While we wait for them to call his name, he drops the facade and stands at an acceptable distance from me.
“Reese, I didn’t mean to piss you off. Lighten up. I’m sure Mr. David is a nice guy to you. He’s a real ball buster in the industry, but he’s very protective of you and that means something. Believe me, I’ve seen the way he treats others and you’re special to him.” He cocks his head to the side and holds out his hand. “Truce?” I shrug and shake his hand. “Have coffee with me?”
“Sure, I’m in no rush to get out in that humidity,” I mutter.
